Markey Machine vice president for business development Scott Atkinson explained to Riviera Maritime Media the rationale for acquiring its competitor. “JR had been a common competitor through the years, so we at Markey came to understand JR’s advantages for certain end-users’ applications,” he said. “For starters, JR is principally active in the hydraulic market, with electric winches being a tiny minority of the recent sales; conversely, Markey has grown steadily more electric, only occasionally supplying hydraulic products.” The two brands are complementary and enable Markey to offer its customers deck machinery from two manufacturers at the same time. “Secondly, the JR line has many references in the international market, as we discovered at Riviera’s TUGTECHNOLOGY ‘23 in Rotterdam in May 2023,” said Mr Atkinson.  “Thirdly, while providing popular designs and effective, custom solutions, JR can be highly competitive in its pricing.”  Another influencing factor was the two companies began to co-operative in the after-market realm about five years ago. “JR was short-handed and Markey had been approached with a request to assess a JR product installed on a tug in Seattle, US, near Markey,” Mr Atkinson continued. “Markey ended up executing servicing, and has done several more since, so we became more familiar with each other over the period. As a result of this initial activity, word spread, and now Markey has created a whole new division, Sentinel Survey, to undertake servicing of Markey’s brand, and increasingly, winches of other manufacturers.” Integration of JR into Markey began in Q4 2023 after the acquisition was completed, and is ongoing, generating synergies in business development. “Without question, and as anticipated, JR’s footprint is such that we are seeing a number of doors opening that had previously been closed,” said Mr Atkinson. “Our interactions at this time are more than daily, they are closer to 24/7, given an enthusiastic market response. At 92 feet length and with a 40-foot beam, these new Robert Allan Ltd-designed RApport 2800 series tugs will rank among the most powerful of Moran’s 95 tugs. Safety was central to decision-making. Brake-holding capacity for the winches, for example, is 339 tons.   Just because a winch has been used for a long time — try 27 years — it doesn’t mean it needs to be replaced. Perhaps it just needs a little modernizing. Twenty-seven years is how long three Markey Machinery DESH-5 deep-sea research winches have been on the 274’×52′ Ronald H. Brown, a NOAA research vessel.  Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Miss., awarded Seattle-based Markey a contract to upgrade the Ronald H. Brown’s deck equipment “to current standards and current practices,” said Scott Kreis, Markey’s vice president of sales. That includes the three Markey DESH-5 winches that the company designed a few decades ago for the oceanographic industry. Markey’s engineering department is upgrading the level-wind system on the winches by replacing the three-sheave level wind with a two-sheave instrumented mechanical-driven level wind. The original level wind “created slight backbends as the cable (conductor cable with metal armor sheathing on the outside and inside coaxial electrical cable or multiple conductor wires protected by insulation) went through the guide in the level wind,” said Kreis. Now, the two-sheave level wind “has zero back bends.” Markey Machinery’s 7H hydraulic winch is Markey’s smallest research winch but has many features found on larger survey winches. The estimated delivery date of the refurbished winches is in the spring of 2024. Smaller Markey winches aren’t giving up any options just because of their size. For example, take Markey’s compact 7H hydraulic winch. The winch is on the 60’×18′ Piping Plover, a harbor survey vessel with twin 670-hp Caterpillar C18s, built by Aluma Marine, Harvey, La. The Piping Plover was delivered to the New York City Department of Environmental Protection in January.  The 7H hydraulic winch (an electric model is also available) is not only the lone aluminum winch in Markey’s lineup, but it is also the smallest research winch, at 50″×50″×60″ and 1,350 lbs. without its wire. The 7H winch includes “features almost never found even on deep-sea research machines 500 times larger,” said Kreis, including instrumented level wind with load monitoring showing how much cable is out.  The winch comes with two drums, which allows different types of wire on each drum, thus, drums can be swapped out as needed. “That’s something you don’t see very often,” said Kreis. There are also two control stations, load monitoring and a slip-ring assembly. The slip-ring assembly allows cable with electrical conductors to be wound in on a winch drum or let out without the rotating cable losing its electrical connection to the onboard electrical outlet. Markey’s new winch inspection service, Sentinel Survey, marked the first phase of the job. Foss was one of the first customers for Markey’s Sentinel effort several years ago. As word of the new service spread, Sentinel has grown and evolved. Markey now services other manufacturers’ winches also. Service now exceeds conventional inspection, to include vibration analysis and thermal imaging. The final report provides comprehensive information necessary to make informed budgetary and planning decisions. Markey’s Sentinel customer base has expanded to include other tugboat operators, and new fishing and government vessel customers. Sentinel Survey is comprised of current Markey production and design engineering staff. Markey’s DEPC-32 model has 107 tons of brake-holding force, which is notable for such a compact winch. The winch develops 11,350 lbs. of line pull at 50 ft. per minute line retrieval speed, at the barrel layer. The winch drum accommodates 525’ of 6.5” circumference synthetic line. Scott Kreis, Vice President of Sales and Engineering at Markey, said Foss had played a key role in the development of this model from the very beginning. “We have been most fortunate to have a customer like Foss.   High Performance Markey Render/Recover® Winch Systems In the late 1990’s Markey Machine began working with customers to develop an ultra-high-performance winch system. This new winch system (Class II & Class III ARR), designed specifically for workboats & tugboats, now had the capability of making use of a workboat’s full horsepower and capabilities with more emphasis on safety for the crew, vessel, and environment. This system is continually being improved upon with every order; ever-evolving into a highly-advanced system that can readily be adapted to multiple applications and missions based on the changing needs of the customer. Such remarkable advances in these workboat equipment features and capabilities have transferred well to the applications and needs of oceanographic research work, allowing for more dependable data gathering and also reducing the risk and costs associated with the loss or damage to scientific research equipment. Markey hawser escort winches and ship-assist winches utilize superior technology and capabilities through their Markey Render/Recover® or Markey Asymmetric Render/Recover® (ARR) technologies. Markey Render/Recover® is a dynamic constant-tension winch control system that provides equal power for both inhaul and payout of hawser line. Functionally, one can think of it as a spring-loaded dog leash. Markey Asymmetric Render/Recover® is the same thing, but with a much higher power capability on the payout side of the cycle and are therefore considered a “super winch.” Markey Render/Recover® – History & Evolution Traditionally, and to some extent still today, ship assist lines were worked by hand. Eventually the size and horsepower of tugboats increased to the point where a line with adequate strength became too heavy for a man to handle (about 3” in radius). To meet the demand for stronger lines in smaller sizes, a new type of rope was developed, referred to as Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene or UHMPE synthetic line. (It is interesting to note that a 3” manila line with a breaking strength of 38 tons can today be replaced with a Spectra line of the same diameter with a breaking strength of 427 tons.) It is now considered impractical to handle lines of any size on a tug over 3000 horsepower by hand because of crew safety, operating costs, and the ability to respond quickly to any ship-assist or escort situation. These are all factors that are considered critical to a tugboat’s operation. Development of the Markey Render-Recover® Winch System In 1995, with the construction of the tugs Protector and Guard for Crowley Marine Services, Markey Machine developed the operational concept of Markey Render/Recover® controls for its hawser winches. The idea was to develop a winch that would increase the performance, speed, and safety of certain tug escort and assist operations by automating certain winch functions. The primary goals were based on controlling line tension to: automatically haul in and pay out line during close-in ship-assist maneuvers, automatically haul in and pay out line during extended escort operations (in some cases, tanker escorts had a duration of over 10-12 hours) to reduce operator fatigue and wear and tear on the hawser line. The Class II Hawser Winch with the Markey Render/Recover® system provided automatic “constant-tension” performance up to the limit of the hydraulic or electric power available. The power limitations of the first Class II Hawser Winch’s led to the development of the CLASS III Escort Winch with Markey Asymmetric Render/Recover® controls. Increasing Markey Render-Recover® Performance & Speed Early in 2000, Markey Machine was asked to develop a winch concept for Crowley’s planned new tug, the Response. This tugboat would be involved in high-speed tanker escorts in the Strait of Juan De Fuca and ship-assist operations in Anacortes, Washington. Design goals for this new concept included: Increasing the Markey Render-Recover® performance to match indirect towing requirements by increasing inhaul and payout line-pull, Increasing the Markey Render/Recover® inhaul and payout speeds The solution was to design a gearbox, or transmission, below-deck, controlled by electronics to automatically shift as required to match pull and speed requirements. As well, the overall system efficiency and performance was increased by using a custom motor to drive the winch. Electric winches offer the highest overall system efficiency, providing full programmability and the ability to dissipate horsepower through dynamic braking resistors. Another feature of the new design was an adjustable levelwind that allowed the operator to influence how the line is spooled onto the drum. Synthetic hawsers are difficult to spool at high load due to problems associated with “diving” or “burying the line.” Improved Shock-Load & Braking Control Finally, a disc brake was integrated into the design to improve shock-load and braking control, eliminating the drawbacks of traditional band-type drum brakes. Self-energizing band-type brakes are known for being able to withstand very high loads but they cannot be made to “slip” in a reliable, smooth fashion. Markey Asymmetric Render/Recover® – History and Evolution Existing Hawser Tension Displays are limited to displaying line tension only when the drum band brake is set. With Markey Asymmetric Render/Recover® Controls, a load pin is incorporated into the gearbox to directly measure drive and braking torque. This is displayed in the wheelhouse as line pull. To simplify use, the engineers at Markey Machine improved operator controls in the wheelhouse by separating them into “primary” controls on the starboard side and “secondary” controls on the port side.
